Semester-long project, Carnegie Mellon University, Fall 2021

WanderMath

    • Semester-long AR app project

    • Team of five graduate students

    • Elementary math education

    • Released for iOS and Android devices in 2021

  • As co-producer, I focused on external-facing production tasks such as coordinating playtests, communication with our client, arranging press coverage, and running meetings. My fellow co-producer Leslie handled internal team management tasks.

I organized playtests with over 70 people, including kids ages 4-17 and education professionals. We playtested at schools and museums in Pittsburgh and West Virginia.

I supported our team’s artist by providing graphic design for promotional and media materials.

    Skills used:

    • Software: Trello, Google Suite, Slack, Photoshop

    • Soft skills: presentations, public speaking, written and verbal communication, organization

  • I designed the math learning content of each of the three activities within WanderMath. They use the 4th and 5th grade math standards of West Virginia as their basis.

I provided the script, audio design, and voice acting for all lines delivered by our character Finley, the skateboarding chinchilla.

Additionally, I compiled the WanderMath Teacher Resource Guide. It includes a walkthrough of each activity from the student’s perspective, information about the math concepts, questions teachers can use in the classroom, and troubleshooting information.

    Skills used:

    • Creative software: Figma, Reaper, Pro Tools, Premiere, Photoshop, Illustrator

    • Other software: Google Suite, MS Office

    • Other skills: script writing, educational content design, game design, documentation, research, pitching

  • WanderMath is an Entertainment Technology Center (ETC) project which made an Augmented Reality (AR) experience inspired by Math Walks, to help 4th and 5th graders engage in open-ended math adventures. Our project is downloadable from the iOS App Store and the Google Play Store!

The Center for Arts and Education at West Liberty University commissioned this project and provided us with guidance throughout the semester. WanderMath was field tested in classrooms in our partner schools in the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia, as well as at the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh’s Tech Playground and MuseumLab. Our project not only helps kids “see math” but also engages them in play with math.
