Fashion Empire

Quest Designer for a mobile fashion game and boutique simulator, March 2019-August 2020

Project Overview

  • Mobile fashion game and boutique simulator

  • Active Facebook community of 30,000+ players, primarily adult women

  • Remote team of 20 located in Hong Kong, Australia, UK, and USA

  • My job title: Quest Designer, working on a team with two other designers

  • Biweekly content release schedule

  • Top rated boutique simulator on iOS, Android, and Amazon devices

  • In my role as quest designer, I was responsible for designing the narrative of the entire game. I designed arcs for our cast of 90+ characters at all 80 levels of the game.

Additionally, I was responsible for integrating story into our biweekly releases of new content packs. I also planned time-limited quests themed to holidays and world events.

I collaborated with the art team to design new NPC characters, fashion items, and environments to tie in with the game narratives.

I recruited, hired, and trained a dialogue writer to collaborate with me on writing and designing the game’s quests. Together, we wrote over 150,000 words in quests, including branching dialogue. Before he was hired, I wrote all the quest dialogue independently. After, I edited all of his work for style and content.

    • Other: writing, editing, proofreading, copy editing, narrative design, character concepts, written and verbal communication, collaboration, remote work across time zones

  • I designed new game mechanics and features for Fashion Empire and an unreleased prototype game. I created documentation for the programming team to implement my new features.

I was responsible for creating game balancing structures that make sense for a freemium monetization system. I documented all changes in the game design document.

I managed large spreadsheets of game data with millions of cells on a day-to-day basis. I used GScript to automate formulas and processes, and fixed spreadsheet errors that caused bugs in the game.

    • Other: game design, monetization design, iOS QA testing, user metrics tracking, game design documents, written and verbal communication, collaboration, remote teamwork across time zones

Frenzoo donated a portion of proceeds in June 2020 to Black Girls Code, Equal Justice Initiative, and Reclaim the Block. I wrote material to educate our player community about Black Lives Matter and related social issues both in game and in the Facebook player community.

Additionally, I assisted in moderating the Facebook group for the Fashion Empire player community. I created polls for players, responded to player questions and concerns related to game and narrative design, and promoted new content.
