Virtual Escape Room

Freelance, November 2020

    • Virtual escape room experience on Google Meet for a 50 person corporate team bonding acitivity

    • Solo project

    • Three weeks of design and prep before the ten minute escape room experience

  • I created all puzzles associated with this escape room. Due to the short runtime constraint and the large number of players, I split players up into three teams and constructed a short puzzle for each, plus a meta-puzzle at the end.

I enlisted three confederates on the corporate team to act as game masters for their individual teams and manipulate the physical puzzle objects when directed by their team members. I created a hint guide for my confederates to use if their team members got stuck at various different points in the puzzle with various amounts of time remaining. And I facilitated rehearsals to ensure the game masters could manage their team members in the short runtime on the day of the event.

    Skills:

    • Digital: spreadsheets, Google Meet, Google Suite

    • Other skills: client communication, writing, game design, virtual stage management

  • I designed a minimal narrative where all story and instructional information could be delivered in under thirty seconds. I wrote scripts for each of my three game masters for each team, and a script for each of several possible outcomes of the meta-puzzle.

After interviewing my game masters, I was able to customize the theme and flavor text of the three puzzles to hobbies and personality traits shared by their teams. This also allowed me to customize physical puzzle objects for each team by adding printouts to objects they had in their homes, without visiting any on-site locations at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

    Skills:

    • Other skills: scriptwrititing, narrative design, client communication
